The next Wordpress meeting at Platt has been planned for September 12th, 2:00pm, in room 205. Please spread the word! Students and faculty are welcome.

Hi all, The next wordpress meet is planned for the 18th of July (2:00 again?). It would be great if we could have some confirmed “speakers.” I’d like to invite anyone to present something at the next meet!  It would only need to be about 15 minutes long and does not need to be advanced (advanced is cool too, though).

Some ideas:

• a project you are working on
• a plugin you really like
• adding custom functionality
• theming
• writing plugins
• child themes
• integrating WP with other popular platforms
• SEO
• E-commerce
• widgets
• blogging
• etc…

Everyone welcome!  Feel free to make suggestions for topics/stuff to do over in the wp-meetups group or here in the comments.

Wordpress 3.0 RC just came out today, I’d love to talk about/demo some of the new features. If any of you have already played with it, let’s talk about your experiments!

Wordpress TV!

Wordpress’s official video site has great training videos for all abilities, as well as admin panel instructions that are good to send to clients.  Something as simple as “how to publish a post” is a great resource for a client to turn to in their time of need (like when they want to update their site at 3:00 in the morning and you’d rather they not wake you up for some customer service).

Custom Menus!

I used to use a plugin for this (that was old and seriously touchy) and lots of conditional wp_list_pages() commands.  The new custom menus system is really easy to control.  I can’t wait until it’s out of beta and ready for use on client sites.

After soaking up lots of wordpress buzz at OC Wordcamp last weekend, I am inspired to rally Platt WP-fanatics together to  share projects, get ideas, and help new wp-enthusiasts get up and running smoothly.

I love wordpress for the robust features that it gives its users, and the value we can pass on to our clients. This site was set up in about 10 minutes. Can’t beat that with a stick!

So this site finally gave me an excuse to try buddypress - I’d heard the buzz about it a while ago, and never had a real application for it. Right out of the box, it is pretty sweet!  I’m trying to iron out the avatar bug (for now, get a gravatar), and trying to decide if this site really needs the “groups” and “forums” functionality. Try it out and let me know what you think
